Jama Network – Cannabinoids for Medical Use – 2015
This research analysis, lead by Penny Whiting from The University Of Bristol, looked at 79 randomized trials to determine whether bigger-scale trials were needed. They found that the quality of the research wasn’t good enough to say for sure whether CBD was an effective treatment.

The more thorough research did show CBD’s benefits in chronic pain relief but showed up a lack of solid research in areas like Tourette syndrome, reducing nausea and sleep disorders.

This analysis suggests that CBD does have some incredible health benefits but that larger-scale clinical research is needed.

New England Journal of Medicine – Trial of Cannabidiol for Drug-Resistant Seizures in the Dravet Syndrome – 2017

This 2017 study was a really important one in the world of medical marijuana. Before this study was conducted, the research wasn’t of a high enough standard to be passable as a clinical trial. That’s because the industry standard requires a randomized double-blinded study. That means that some of the participants get the drug and some get a placebo but neither the participants or the researchers know which is which until the trial ends, hence the term ‘double blind’.

The study looked at 120 children and teenagers with Dravet’s syndrome, a form of epilepsy. They found that the median frequency of seizures reduced from 12.4 to 5.9 with the use of CBD, compared to a drop of only 14.9 to 14.1 with the placebo. That shows that CBD has a really positive effect on these epilepsy sufferers. 5% of the CBD patients stopped having seizures altogether. The study did also show an increase in adverse side-effects like vomiting, diarrhea among the CBD users.

This study should be a huge step forward for CBD as an epilepsy treatment. Not only because of the positive results but also because of the way the research was conducted.

Impact of Cannabis Use on the Development of Psychotic Disorders – 2014

Cannabis has long been associated with getting ‘high’. While it does that effect, thanks to the high concentration of the cannabinoid, THC, it can also have an antipsychotic effect. The CBD in cannabis has a calming effect on the brain, thanks to its relationship with the cannabinoid receptors in our brain. This study is one of the most important CBD studies because it has a comprehensive look at the relationship between cannabis and psychosis. This will have huge implications for the use of CBD as a medicine because it is extremely important to prove it doesn’t have any negative psychotic effects.

Cannabidiol reduces the anxiety induced by public speaking
This study looked at the relationship between Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and CBD. This is important because anxiety disorders are one of the biggest mental health issues in America. The treatments offered at the minute range from Xanax and other benzodiazepines to Prozac. Unfortunately, all of these medications come with negative side-effects and often just treat the symptoms. While the title is a little hard to understand, the general outcome of the study was that CBD has a positive role to play in the ‘pharmaceutical management’ of these health conditions.

There are hundreds of studies that we could have talked about. We chose these particular studies because of their impact on CBD becoming a mainstream medicine. It is very clear from the research done that CBD has some pretty amazing medicinal uses, and it can be used in a wide-array of medicinal practices.
