Although medicinal cannabis has been known for millennia, in the last few decades, medicine has begun more serious research in this field. Given that this plant is highly represented all over the world, if its use in pharmacy would expand, there could be many revolutionary findings, such as medicines for many diseases which decimated the population.
Chronic pain is a huge issue that affects many many people worldwide, and millions in the U.S.
In addition to helping remedy pain, CBD has been found useful for many other conditions as well. However, the stiffness, joint aches, and other painful issues(including neuropathy) that so many suffer from is one of the biggest reasons for cannabidiol’s recent surge in popularity.
The issue of the use of cannabis is almost daily mentioned in the media. Throughout the world, there are numerous movements that seek to legalize this plant for medical use, which would bring many benefits, not only for patients, but also for producers, sellers, and the state. It would reduce the abuse of this plant, and in that way, it could finally be used for the right purposes.
Although marijuana is mostly classified in the first category of narcotics, the US Department of Health has recently shown interest in the scientific examination of marijuana and pointed out that preliminary data suggest that, in specific medical conditions and symptoms, CBD found in cannabis can be helpful. Cannabinoids in products such as CBD oil are used as alternative methods of treatment, or as a supplement to the traditional way of treating.
Today, as more and more people turn to cannabis use for treating many diseases, scientific research of this plant and its components, especially the CBD, is experiencing revival. Numerous researches have proven the positive effect of this plant, and in the text below, we will show you some of them.
Unfortunately, cancer is a painful disease for which remedy hasn’t yet been found. Or it has not yet been officially published. There are many indications that scientists are on the trail of something significant. Maybe they are waiting for solid proofs to reveal that in public, considering that cancer research is developing in many directions. It’s no secret that the cure for any disease is in nature, not in synthetic compounds.
Research is conducted on substances which show some potential, so the examination process is a logical trace to determine if a compound has a chance of inhibiting the growth or development of malign cells. All the scientific research, examining whether cannabinoids can cure cancer, were performed on cancer cells grown in a laboratory or in animals. It is necessary to be cautious when these results are extrapolated to people; each organism is different and will react individually to specific therapies.
Painful nerve impulses are very prevalent in patients with cancer, and many that undergo things like chemotherapy end up living with residual chronic pain for a long time.
Although there are serious indications that cannabinoids are the potential cancer drug, more detailed research is expected in the near future. Several laboratory studies have shown the effect of CBD on malignant cells, such as the study published in The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. Regular doses of cannabinoids can stop the growth of these cells, that is, prevent them from getting oxygen and nutritious substances which “feed them.” This study has proven that an external source of cannabinoids helps our organism in the production of endocannabinoids, cells that make our immune system powerful and effective in the fight against the disease.
In case these are used as a supplement to conventional treatment, CBD can significantly ease the symptoms that occur after treatment such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy. This is particularly important for patients who have begun the chemotherapy process – nausea, fainting, and weakness are the consequences of this way of cancer treatment. CBD-based products help to alleviate these painful symptoms. Cannabinoids control nausea by influencing serotonin receptors, so there will be less stimulation of the center for vomiting in the brain.
All of these studies help to clarify the different effects of high-dose purified cannabinoids and molecular-level disclosure as to the response of some cancer cells. These may affect the potential of CBD to treat cancer effectively and targeted in the future.
Research about CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects
Inflammatory processes in the body occur as the response of our organism to a potential threat by eternal factors. Inflammation is one of the symptoms of many diseases and almost never happens without reason. If your immune system’s ability to control inflammation is disturbed, the risk of developing serious health conditions, skin disorders, and premature aging arise.
Arthritis is a disease which is caused by inflammatory processes that occur in the joints, thus disturbing movement and causing pain. A study published in European Journal of Pain, conducted on rats suffering from arthritis, shows a significant improvement in mobility and symptom relief. However, further research is needed in order to prove the effectiveness of CBD in humans.
CBD has proven to be promising for controlling inflammatory reactions and discomfort caused by Crohn’s disease. CBD has so much potential in regulating digestive disorders and inflammatory bowel disease, and to be considered as a new class of drugs for treating these health conditions.
Positive effects in treating neurodegenerative diseases
Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease, often involve the inflammation of neuronal tissue. This initial inflammation acts as a defensive mechanism in earlier stages when the organism tries to overcome the disease and then develops oxidative stress – known as the impact of reactive oxygen. It affects releasing free radicals which act on the brain receptors, reducing their functionality. This leads to a number of neurological symptoms that reduce the patient’s ability to function independently (the memory loss is one of the worst consequences of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s).
All of these diseases can be very painful and the aches that patients with them experience is tremendous.
In recent years, numerous studies have been carried out to find the medicine or at least something that will relieve the symptoms of these mental diseases. In the study of Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute, University of Wollongong has been concluded that the use of cannabis (CBD) oil as an anti-inflammatory agent can help slow down the progression of the disease.
The fact is that drugs based on cannabinoids have tremendous potential. The studies that have been carried out so far prove this and require further experimenting in this direction. The use of these medicines would revolutionize the treatment of many diseases, the mortality rate would drastically decrease, and the quality of life of the patients would be improved.
People all over the world swear by CBD as an effective treatment against all sorts of health conditions.
CBD (Cannabidiol) is the active chemical found in cannabis that has amazing health benefits. It’s not to be confused with THC, the other main active chemical and the one that famously gets you ‘high’. CBD has no psychotic effects, so it can safely be used as a natural medicine.
The medical marijuana community is full of anecdotal evidence proving it to be a wonder-drug, such as the story of Charlotte Figi, the 3 year-old epilepsy-sufferer who went from 300 seizures a day to 0 by using CBD. This story is amazing and true, and now solid research is being done to back up stories like this. In the last 10 years, the amount of research being undertaken has increased exponentially.
In this article, we are going to look at the research that has been done around CBD and its benefits. We focused on some of the main research done rather than making a comprehensive list of all of the relevant research:
Jama Network – Cannabinoids for Medical Use – 2015
This research analysis, lead by Penny Whiting from The University Of Bristol, looked at 79 randomized trials to determine whether bigger-scale trials were needed. They found that the quality of the research wasn’t good enough to say for sure whether CBD was an effective treatment.
The more thorough research did show CBD’s benefits in chronic pain relief but showed up a lack of solid research in areas like Tourette syndrome, reducing nausea and sleep disorders.
This analysis suggests that CBD does have some incredible health benefits but that larger-scale clinical research is needed.
The work done by Penny Whiting and her team is so important because it gives a solid recommendation for further research. Hopefully, analysis like this will lead to CBD becoming a mainstream medicine.
This 2017 study was a really important one in the world of medical marijuana. Before this study was conducted, the research wasn’t of a high enough standard to be passable as a clinical trial. That’s because the industry standard requires a randomized double-blinded study. That means that some of the participants get the drug and some get a placebo but neither the participants or the researchers know which is which until the trial ends, hence the term ‘double blind’.
The study looked at 120 children and teenagers with Dravet’s syndrome, a form of epilepsy. They found that the median frequency of seizures reduced from 12.4 to 5.9 with the use of CBD, compared to a drop of only 14.9 to 14.1 with the placebo. That shows that CBD has a really positive effect on these epilepsy sufferers. 5% of the CBD patients stopped having seizures altogether. The study did also show an increase in adverse side-effects like vomiting, diarrhea among the CBD users.
This study should be a huge step forward for CBD as an epilepsy treatment. Not only because of the positive results but also because of the way the research was conducted.
Cannabis has long been associated with getting ‘high’. While it does that effect, thanks to the high concentration of the cannabinoid, THC, it can also have an antipsychotic effect. The CBD in cannabis has a calming effect on the brain, thanks to its relationship with the cannabinoid receptors in our brain. This study is one of the most important CBD studies because it has a comprehensive look at the relationship between cannabis and psychosis. This will have huge implications for the use of CBD as a medicine because it is extremely important to prove it doesn’t have any negative psychotic effects.
Cannabidiol reduces the anxiety induced by public speaking
This study looked at the relationship between Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and CBD. This is important because anxiety disorders are one of the biggest mental health issues in America. The treatments offered at the minute range from Xanax and other benzodiazepines to Prozac. Unfortunately, all of these medications come with negative side-effects and often just treat the symptoms. There is a huge push in the U.S. towards more natural remedies like CBD. The research focused on public speaking and they found that the use of CBD before the event reduced the participants anxiety.
The Antitumor Activity of Plant-Derived Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoids – 2015
This 2015 study looked at the effect CBD had on cancer cells. This is an important study in the world of CBD because it is one of the most comprehensive studies of its type. Cancer is one of the biggest problems in the health world and scientists are always looking for new ways of treating it. Whilst this study was completed on animal models, it does show that CBD has some beneficial effects on the treatment of cancerous cells, and is likely to have the same effect in humans.
The marijuana component cannabidiol inhibits beta-amyloid-induced tau protein hyperphosphorylation through Wnt/beta-catenin pathway rescue in PC12 cells – 2006
There is a lot of anecdotal evidence of CBD’s effect on neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. This study was one of the first to look at the science behind this claim. While the title is a little hard to understand, the general outcome of the study was that CBD has a positive role to play in the ‘pharmaceutical management’ of these health conditions.
There are hundreds of studies that we could have talked about. We chose these particular studies because of their impact on CBD becoming a mainstream medicine. It is very clear from the research done that CBD has some pretty amazing medicinal uses, and it can be used in a wide-array of medicinal practices. Most of these studies will pave the way for yet more research that will hopefully acknowledge CBD as the important medicine that it is.
